European Commissioner Marta Kos discussed reforms on the path to the European Union in separate meetings with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic in Belgrade on Tuesday.
An Instagram post quoted Vucic as saying that they had a good meeting about key challenges and opportunities with focus on reforms and the EU Growth Plan for the Western Balkans. “I stressed our full readiness to speed up reforms – not because of bureaucratic demands, but because we believe they bring a better life for our citizens. Serbia sees the Growth Plan as a chance to accelerate economic development, strengthen institutions, and bring our country closer to the European Union, not only politically, but also essentially, through concrete benefits and standards that citizens can feel. I believe that through serious work, responsibility and honest partnership with the European Union we will take advantage of the existing momentum and open a new phase in the process of European integration of Serbia,” Vucic said.
The president’s post did not quote Kos while Brnabic’s Instagram post quoted the commissioner as saying that there is an ideal opportunity to complete the unification of Europe bearing in mind deep geo-political changes. “She expressed strong political will to cooperate with the new government in implementing reforms which will enable EU membership and stressed that Serbia has an important place in the expansion process and is a significant partner to the Union,” Brnabic’s post said.
Brnabic said their meeting was friendly, comprehensive and open about key issues of Serbia’s European integration. “I reiterated our unequivocal commitment to the European path and pointed out all the reforms we are implementing. I believe that with mutual cooperation we can speed up processes that lead to Serbia's full membership in the European Union,” Brnabic said and added that she hopes Kos’ visit will help intensify Serbia’s European integration.
The post said they also discussed draft media laws, the election of a new REM Council, implementation of ODIHR recommendations to improve the election process and other issues.
