The Kosovo government said on Monday that the European Union should revoke what it said are “unjust measures” following the referendum on the ethnic Albanian mayors of four majority-Serb municipalities.

A press release said that the the referendum was one of the conditions set by the EU to de-escalate the situation in the north was met. It expressed regret over the low turnout. The local Serbs boycotted Sunday’s vote with the Serb Party saying it was the right thing to do.

“The results of the vote show that there is no will to dismiss the current mayors,” it said.

"The process was launched following constant demands for new elections in those municipalities due to the lack of full legitimacy for the current mayors after the low turnout at the elections of April 23, 2024…. However, the Serb List, whose members resigned as mayors before the party initiated yesterday’s vote, boycotted the democratic process again despite calls from the international community,” it said.

The government said it met its obligation to the public and the agreement with the EU to de-escalate the situation in the north.
