Kosovo Serb protest over vandalized church
Local Serbs staged a protest in the Kosovo town of Zubin Potok after damage was inflicted on an Orthodox Christian church.
The crowd gathered in front of the local police station in the northern majority-Serb town facing a cordon of local police officers.
The focus of the protest was a prayer service in the town church with some in the crowd carrying icons of saints. The protesters said that the church in a nearby village was vandalized, claiming that it was done by members of the Kosovo special police.
A statement issued by organizers said that they are even more revolted by attempts to take over two more churches in the Zubin Potok municipality
Orthodox Christianity is a major part of Serbian national identity, especially among in Kosovo where a large number of Serbian Orthodox Church shrines and monasteries are located, some dating back to early Christianity.
