European Chief Prosecutor Laura Codruța Kövesi told the Serbian state TV (RTS) that her office is investigating the possible misuse of European Union funds in the reconstruction of the Novi Sad Railway Station not the deaths of 15 people on November 1.

She said her office is looking into the loans for the reconstruction of Serbia’s railways from the European Investment Bank (EIB). Kovesi said that the investigation was launched after a private individual filed a complaint. She said she expects the cooperation of the Serbian judiciary in providing information and evidence.

According to her, the cases are under the jurisdiction of courts in Belgium and Luxembourg where the institutions that provided the funding are based.

Kovesi said the fact that Serbians are raising their voice against corruption is a positive sign which shows the public realizes how serious that is.
