European Union and US envoys Miroslav Lajcak and Gabriel Escobar will try to ease tensions in Kosovo during their visits to Pristina and Belgrade next week, Radio Free Europe said on Friday.

RFE said that it learned unofficially that the EU Special Representative and State Department official would travel to the region but did not specify when.

Riots broke out in northern majority-Serb municipalities earlier this week when Albanian mayors, elected in a recent vote boycotted by the Serbs, tried to enter the local administration buildings. Clashes with the Kosovo Police and KFOR ensued and officials from Belgrade and Pristina blamed each other for the rioting.

European Union High Representative Josep Borrell, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz met with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani at the European Political Community summit in Chisinau, calling for new local elections with Borrell warning of serious consequences.
