European Union Special Representative Miroslav Lajcak said in Brussels on Thursday that Serbia and Kosovo can’t normalize relations without a clear vision linked to the European integration process.
Speaking at a conference on EU enlargement organized by the Friends of Europe, Lajcak said that progress has to be achieved in normalizing Belgrade-Pristina relations before the European Parliament elections in mid-2024. Don’t wait too long and don’t wait for a new European Commission, he added.
According to the EU envoy, the momentum on expansion is having a positive effect on the process to normalize relations. He warned that the momentum won’t last forever and called the countries of the Western Balkans to benefit from the unique opportunity provided by the open door to the Union. This is the first time that I see the EU readier for the Western Balkans than the region is ready for the EU, he said.
