Lawyer Sofija Mandic told Danas daily that there are more than a million “non-existent” illegally registered voters in Serbia.

According to Mandic, there are 1.1 million voters who are entered in the voter registry illegally, either at false addresses or are deceased. She added that there are 230,000 illegally registered voters in Belgrade alone.

She said that the filing by the Serbia Against Violence (SPN) coalition with the Constitutional Court included evidence of voters registered as resident at false addresses and what she called surplus voters in the registry.

The numbers are a conservative estimate based on official data from the Republic Statistics Office (RZS) on adults living in Belgrade and Serbia, she said. “A census of everyone living in Belgrade was done in 2022 and the published data shows that there were 1,380,000 adults but the voter registry for the most recent elections has 1,613,000 people on it,” she said adding that this includes people who do not have the right to vote such as foreigners and people not resident in Belgrade.
