Lawyer says Interpol refuses Belgrade’s request for arrest warrants

The six students and activists fled Serbia after the authorities launched criminal proceedings claiming they were undermining constitional order. The group were active in the anti-government protests. The charges are based on a recording of their meeting at which they discussed plans for the protests.

Lawyer Zeljko Kocic said the Serbian authorities asked Interpol to issue international arrest warrants for the six Novi Sad students and activists. He said the decision means Interpol will not cooperate in what he described as a politically motivated case, adding that the organization's refusal represents an important safeguard for his clients.

He said the decision reflects Interpol's long-standing rules prohibiting involvement in cases of a political character.
