Several hundred lawyers gathered in front of the Serbian Bar Association in central Belgrade on Tuesday to protest against the draft law on litigation procedures.
The lawyers want the draft law withdrawn saying that they would not compromise over it. They object to the fact that under the draft law, court taxes and costs have to be paid prior to filing law suits which they say means that most people won’t be able to exercise their rights in court.
Speakers at the protest rejected claims by the authorities that the draft law would be amended to reach a consensus. They said that the law was drafted in secrecy and that the Bar Association did not say a word about it. They warned that the draft law prevents anyone who suffered damages from seeking justice in court.
The protest ended in front of the Justice Ministry.
