Macron: Kosovo visa liberalization could be reviewed
French President Emanuel Macron said in Tirana on Tuesday that official Paris could review the decision to allow visa free travel to the European Union for residents of Kosovo.
Speaking at a news conference with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, Macron warned that France could review Kosovo's visa-free travel into the European Union, due to enter into force on January 1, if the Belgrade and Pristina made no progress in easing tensions.
“I expect the Serbian president's spirit of responsibility and I expect the same from the Kosovar president and prime minister," Macron said.
"I say it very clearly, we have made a gesture of trust on the visa issue. As far as France is concerned, this is conditional on keeping your word, and today that word has not been kept," Macron said.
He also appealed to Belgrade and Pristina to show “a spirit of responsibility” and reduce tensions in the north of Kosovo.
“It is President Vucic's responsibility to condemn in the strongest possible terms the acts of 24 September" and to "contribute to restoring calm on the border….. What we expect from the authorities of Kosovo and Serbia is simple: the reorganization of elections in the municipalities (in northern Kosovo) where they were held under inappropriate conditions. The participation of Serbs in these elections and in the institutions, the recognition of the Association of Serbian Municipalities by the Kosovar authorities. In that order, completely and totally," Macron said.
