
A million of the total of 1.68 million pensioners in Serbia receive less than 30,000 Dinars a month while a third of them get up to 15,000 Dinars according to official figures from the national pension fund (PIO).
Farmers get the lowest pensions with 2,130 of them getting less than 5,000 Dinars (1 Euro – 118 Dinars).
According to PIO figures, the average montly pension is 29,374 Dinars while the average monthly salary in March 2021 stood at 65,289 Dinars with the consumer basket for a family of three costing 74,829 Dinars in February. Based on official statistics, anyone living on 19,381 Dinars a month or less risks falling into poverty.
A poll on income and living standards in October 2020 showed that 21 percent of the population over the age of 65 lived on the verge of poverty.
Belgrade University economics Professor Mihail Arandarenko told N1 that the worst off are the elderly who have no right to pension, most of them farmers. He said that most pensions are low with some being extremely low, adding that the ratio of highest to lowest pensions in Serbia is 9 to 1.
