Several hundred participant gathered in Belgrade on Saturday for the 'March of Solidarity with Ukraine' walking from the Pioneer Park to the Republic Square, in Belgrade downtown, carrying the flags of Ukraine and the European Union as well as the 'Stop evil, stop war' banners.
Representatives of the diplomatic corps and the Ukrainian community also took part in the walk, and after the crowd arrived at the final spot, they observed a minute’s silence to pay tribute to those who died in the war.
Serbian politicians Nenad Canak, Pavle Grbovic, Dobrica Veselinovic, former Prime Minister Zoran Zivkovic, as well as former SNS party member Dragan Sormaz, who carried the Ukrainian flag, were also seen at the rally.
The organisers of the gathering is NGO ‘Russian Democratic Society’ and the event was held under the slogan ‘Two years of invasion, 10 years of war’.
Ukrainian Ambassador to Serbia Volodymyr Tolkach said on this ocassion that Ukraine is trying to contain Russian aggression on its territory today thanks to the diplomatic corps and information.
“Russia is prepared for a long and arduous war that will exhaust Ukraine, and if we want to fight against dictatorship and totalitarianism, we need to improve our efficiency, that is, we should not let Ukraine lose this war,” said Tolkach addressing the rally.
Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Emanuel stressed that the EU is ready to stand by Ukraine as long as necessary and to provide humanitarian, financial and military aid so that the Ukrainians remain true to their goal.
“We are here to honour all Ukrainians who lost their lives and loved ones in this terrible war. Also, we are here to show our dedication to continuous support in the coming period,” he stressed.
US Ambassador Christopher Hill noted that this week’s meeting between Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Athens, as well as online participation of Prime Minister Ana Brnabic in the summit of the Crimean Platform on Friday “are a sign that Ukraine and Serbia are getting closer”.
“I am very proud that the USA was among the main supporters and we will continue to do so for as long as necessary. This is not the decision of our government, but of our people, all over the USA you will see flags of Ukraine displayed in yards,”, said Hill
UK Ambassador to Serbia, Edward Ferguson, said that the gathering showed solidarity with “Ukrainian friends who are fighting with extraordinary courage for their lives, families and their freedom.”
