Marta Kos: Novi Sad tragedy is changing Serbia, citizens demand values and the EU

“One year ago, the railway station in Novi Sad collapsed, taking 16 lives. We remember them today,” Kos wrote on X. “That tragedy is changing Serbia. It mobilised people to stand up for responsibility, freedom of expression, and inclusive democracy; the same values that lead Serbia toward the EU,” she added.

Her message was shared by the EU Delegation to Serbia, which also issued a statement expressing its “deepest condolences and sincere solidarity” with the families and loved ones of the 16 victims. The statement was signed by the embassies of all EU member states in Serbia, except Hungary.

“As the country marks one year since the tragic collapse of the railway station canopy in Novi Sad on November 1 last year, we once again extend our deepest condolences and sincere solidarity with the families and loved ones of the 16 people who lost their lives. The tragedy has deeply shaken us all and left a lasting wound in the hearts of many in Serbia and beyond. On this sad anniversary, we urge everyone to mourn the victims with dignity and peace,” the statement said.

The EU’s message also underscored that respect for fundamental rights and values, including freedom of peaceful assembly and freedom of the media, are key European principles that must be protected and upheld by all. The statement called on all parties to act with restraint, lower tensions, and avoid violence.

“The European Union and its member states remain steadfast partners of Serbia and its people. Our shared goal is to help Serbia advance on its path toward EU membership through dialogue, mutual respect, and tangible progress in key reforms, especially in the areas of the rule of law, the electoral framework, and media freedom, all essential for a fairer, safer, and more resilient Serbia,” the EU Delegation said.
