MASA calls for review of state support for Belgrade University
The Network of Academic Solidarity and Engagement (MASA) said that Belgrade University’s drop on the Shanghai list should not be a pretext for political attacks on professors and researchers, but should prompt a review of state support for science and universities.
MASA said the drop in ranking highlights problems including unstable funding, administrative pressure and inadequate conditions for research. It said scientific excellence requires continuity, academic autonomy and sustained investment.
Instead of blaming academics for the university’s ranking, the state should focus on improving conditions for researchers, universities and young scientists, MASA said.
“The future of Serbian science and society is not built through political pressure, but through knowledge, freedom and investment in people,” it added.
