Matic: Man charged with threatening journalist’s safety escaped from house arrest
A man charged with threatening the safety of journalist Ana Lalic Hegedis, identified with the initials S.I., has escaped from house arrest, said Veran Matic, the executive director of the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) and chair of the Commission for the Investigation of Murders of Journalists.
Matic said there is no information available on whether S.I., a French and Serbian national, has left the country.
He said a hearing was scheduled for June 3 at the Higher Court in Belgrade to hear from the accused and review the evidence and confession, along with the transcript of Ana Lalic Hegedis’ testimony. The accused did not appear at the main hearing and violated the house arrest measure imposed on the basis of the judge’s decision in the pretrial proceedings, despite the request by the Special Prosecutor's Office for High-Tech Crime that he be remanded in custody.
Matic requested that the Serbian Internal Affairs Ministry provide protection for Ana Lalic Hegedis’ family, as the person who confessed to having written the terrifying threats is currently on the run.
“We hope that the institutions of Serbia and France will locate, apprehend, and bring this person to justice, not only for the crime committed but also for contempt of court and evasion of justice,” said Matic.
