Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic planned a private visit to the the Jasenovac memorial area in Croatia, a death camp operated by the Ustasha regime during the WWII, where among other ethnic groups many Serbs were tortured to death. According to the information that was initially carried by the Croatian media, Zagreb authorities did not allow Vucic into the country due to the violation of the protocol.
Zagreb-based Jutarnji list daily cited sources in the Croatian government who said that Vucic planned to cross the border from Bosnia and Herzegovina i.e. its Republika Srpska entity without an official announcement to the Croatian authorities and without coordination with the embassy. He would then proceed to Jasenovac around 11 a.m. and further to Pakrac around 2 p.m.
The government unofficially stated that Vucic did not obey any protocol and that he planned to do everything without the procedures and rules of diplomatic relations.
President Vucic briefly reacted to the decision of the Croatian authorities, posting a Jasenovac memorial photo on his Instagram and saying: “Just do your job! The Serb people will live and will never forget!”.

On this occasion, Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a note to the Croatian Embassy in Belgrade, which was rejected by the chargé d’affaires.
Serbian Foreign Minister Nikola Selakovic said that Croatia’s decision is terrifying and that the Government of Serbia will make a decision on the countermeasures that will be introduced.
The first countermeasure was already introduced by the Minister of the Interior, Aleksandar Vulin, who declared that „as of today, all officials of the Croatian state, all holders of official or diplomatic passports will have to separately announce and justify their visit or passage through Serbia and will be placed under a special regime control.”
