Co-chair of the European Union (EU)-Serbia Stabilization and Association Parliamentary Committee (SAPC) Alessandra Moretti said the EU wants to see Serbia become a member, “but not at any cost,” which is why an independent investigation into the alleged irregularities in the Serbian December 17 elections is necessary.

Moretti told the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) that democracy and transparency are very important for the European Parliament, and that they want an investigation into the alleged irregularities.

We want an international inquiry into what went on in the Serbian elections, a reliable and transparent one. The rule of law, citizens' rights, human rights are fundamental values, and we need fair integration, Moretti added.

She reiterated that an investigation is very important in order to learn the truth, adding this was also demanded at the protests in Serbia.

Moretti stressed that cooperation with the Serbian Government and President Aleksandar Vucic is important, but that rules need to be respected.
