MEP Vladimir Prebilic lays wreath at site of Novi Sad tragedy

MEP Vladimir Prebilic, a member of the European Parliament delegation currently on its second day of a fact-finding mission in Serbia, laid a wreath on Saturday at the site of the collapsed canopy at the Novi Sad Railway Station. The tragedy, which occurred on November 1, 2024, resulted in the deaths of 16 people.

Speaking to N1, Prebilic emphasized that to anyone suggesting the tragedy is "nothing special," he would tell them to come to Novi Sad and feel how much the site affects people.
Solidarity with activists and critics of the judiciary
Prebilic laid the wreath in the company of Novi Sad activists who spent months in detention facing charges of "overthrowing the constitutional order." He described it as "unbelievable" that those seeking accountability are blamed for everything while those actually responsible are not.
"Those seeking accountability are heroes; they are not asking for anything abnormal, only for respect for the law and democracy, these are all EU values," Prebilic stated. "It is difficult to understand why heroes are in detention while those who should be in detention are not."
Shock over academic freedom and policing
Commenting on recent events in Novi Sad, including police raids on the Faculty of Philosophy, violence against students, and the dismissal of Professor Jelena Kleut, the MEP noted that such scenes are unimaginable within the European Union.
"We did not experience this even in Yugoslavia; it is unbelievable that such things are happening in the 21st century," he remarked.
Prebilic concluded by stating that the European Parliament delegation came to Serbia to support those who are fighting for the "right cause."
