Connecting in the energy sector and cooperation, especially through the Open Balkan initiative, can contribute to increasing the living standard, it goes beyond day-to-day politics, said a press release issued by Mining and Energy Minister Zorana Mihajlovic’s office.

Mihajlovic told an interview with Serbia’s state television (RTS) that energy transition is an irreversible process and that renewable energy sources are the only path to energy stability and independence.

“When I took over the Mining and Energy Ministry two years ago, the first thing we did was to see where Serbia stands compared with the other countries in the region, EU member countries, and we saw that we did not have the conditions for someone to invest and build big renewable energy capacities,” said Mihajlovic.

She said that, in the meantime, the legislative framework changed, an investment plan was made and a new energy policy adopted.

“It wasn’t easy, there was a lot of resistance, especially from the public companies that failed to understand that thermal power plants were a thing of the past, but we established a basis. Serbia must take a step forward in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and it needs to build new capacities for the generations to come,” said Mihajlovic, adding that these were the reforms that the country needs that have already given results.
