Mihajlovic to Dalli: Serbia committed to equality

Deputy Prime Minister Zorana Mihajlovic told European Equality Commissioner Helena Dalli that Serbia is committed to achieving equal conditions for all of its citizens.

Mihajlovic, head of the government Coordination Body for Gender Equality, said that serious progress has been made, a press release said. “We have made serious progress since the Coordination Body was formed, promoting laws and strategic frameworks in the field of gender equality and banning discrimination,” she said.
According to her, gender equality mechanisms have been formed at all levels. “The situation is better, especially at central level. We have a gender responsible government but we need more women in charge of cities,” Mihajlovic said.
The press release said that Dalli presented directives to combat violence against women and domestic violence and said that giving women more economic power is the priority in achieving equality.
According to the press release, the Commissioner said that coordination between institutions is needed to improve the position of women. She said that gender equality makes sense for the economy and society as a whole which is why the European Commission has launched a number of activities as part of the EU gender equality strategy.
