Serbian Health Minister Zlatibor Loncar said that the criticism directed at the team tasked with evaluating the health impacts of lithium mining only strengthens their resolve to show how much they love Serbia.

He emphasized that these experts have devoted their entire careers to helping people.

These are not people who frequently change jobs or switch political parties, explained Loncar, adding: “They have spent their entire lives treating patients and tackling the roots of disease. Does anyone believe they could be bribed to speak against their own views and jeopardize their careers? They are at the height of their professions, our most esteemed experts,” Loncar told the pro-regime Happy TV.

He also pointed out that, according to the opposition, no one can be considered an expert if they say something positive is being done in Serbia.

“Citizens, there is a man who wants the best for you, he has dedicated himself to this, he is working on it every day, all day long. He wants to be remembered in history for doing something good. He has no intention of doing anything that would later be seen as harmful. Let’s help this man,” Loncar said, referring to Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.

Loncar on Tuesday presented a team of health care experts who will investigate the effects of lithium mining on the health of the public. The plan to form the team was voiced earlier by President Vucic who said that the authorities will not do anything that could jeopardize the health of the population, adding that Rio Tinto’s lithium mining project will be halted if any health risks are identified.
