Minister: New Law on Referendum has nothing to do with Rio Tinto

She argued that the government does not have a position on the Rio Tinto company yet as studies and research on the issue are still being prepared. However, she noted that the company admitted that it did cause environmental consequences in some places, so the Government is very careful because of that.

She also said the new law has nothing to do with Kosovo and Metohija either.

Activists have announced they will block highways and a bridge in Belgrade on Saturday over the issue, which the Obradovic called “irresponsible.”

Speaking about the novelties in the law, she said the Government will have the obligation to compile information on the reasons for and against the proposal that is being decided on and to deliver it to the address of each voter.

She said the adoption of the law was welcomed by European international institutions and the Venice Commission.
