A Serbian cabinet minister said on Friday that 90 percent of the waste water generated across the country ends up in its rivers which are a major source of drinking water.

Traffic, Construction and Infrastructure Minister Tomislav Momirovic told the Clean Serbia meeting at the Serbian Chamber of Commerce (PKS) that the goal is to build a sewer network to cover 80 percent of the population with waste water purification facilities in the next five years. According to him, that network would have 7,000 kilometers of sewers and 250 purification plants. He said that 25 local communities have started on the project this year.

The minister said that the sewer network and water purification plants are an absolute priority for the government.
