Ministry: More Roma in Serbia than census data shows

The Human and Minority Rights Ministry said that there are more Roma living in Serbia than official census data shows.
A press release on International Romani Day said that the actual number of Roma is higher than the official 131,936 included in the census. It said that most of Roma national minority are based in Belgrade and the northern Vojvodina province.
The Ministry said that Roma are recognized as one of the most discriminated and endangered social groups facing challenges with housing, education, employment, social and health care.
“The Ministry calls the public and institutions to show solidarity, understanding and respect for the Roma community. We can create a society of equal opportunities which respects diversity only if each individual has an opportunity to fulfill their full potential,” the press release said.
