Montenegro census results: 41.12% Montenegrins, 32.93% Serbs

According to the results of the Montenegrin population census conducted in December 2023, the largest group of Montenegro's citizens identified themselves as Montenegrins - 41.12 percent (256,436), Serbs followed at 32.93 percent (205,370), while 9.45 percent (58,956) declared themselves as Bosniaks.

Montenegrin daily Vijesti reported that 4.97 percent (30.978) of citizens declared themselves as Albanians, 2.06 percent (12,824) as Russians, and 1.63 percent (10,162) as Muslims.

A small portion of the population, 2.88 percent (17,907), chose not to declare their ethnicity.

The results of the census were announced at a press conference of the Statistical Office of Montenegro (Monstat).

The majority of the people identified as Orthodox Christians - 71.10 percent (443,394), followed by adherents of Islam at 19.99 percent (124,668), while Catholics make up 3.27 percent of the population (20,408).

Atheists accounted for 2.29 percent (14,260) of those surveyed, and 2.10 percent (13,093) preferred not to disclose their religious affiliation.
