Protests against Rio Tinto’s Jadar Project continued it several places in Serbia on Monday.

Crowds gathered in Smederevo, Rekovac, Bresnica and Bor, saying they would not allow the mining of lithium and called the authorities to put an end to the plans for a mine.

The crowd in Smederevo also protested plans by a Chinese company to build an oil refinery in the city which, they said, would add to the environmental problems they have because of the Chinese-owned steel plant.

In Rekovac, the crowd said they are fighting for the Levac and Jadar areas and all of Serbia. Members of the crowd displayed fruit and vegetables from their farms to show how fertile their land is.

Residents of Bresnica said that their village is on the map of geological exploration for lithium.

The crowd in Bor said that a fourth of the local population has contracted some form of cancer according to a 2015 report by the Public Health Institute which they claimed was kept hidden for years. The local mining and smelting plant has been taken over by the Chinese Zijin company. The protest organizers said they would hand a list of demands to their town assembly.
