Sixty-three guns handed in by Serbian citizens at the Pantelej police station in the city of Nis during this year’s illegal weapons collection campaign went missing from July to August 2023.

The campaign was launched in May, after two mass murders in the country, one that took place at the Belgrade Vladislav Ribnikar elementary school and the other in the villages around Mladenovac and Smederevo.

Citizens were invited to hand in unregistered weapons and explosives to the nearest police station without incurring any criminal or other consequences and without the obligation to prove the origin of the weapons.

According to N1’s source from the Serbian Internal Affairs Ministry, an investigation has been launched by the Interior Ministry’s Internal Control Sector.

The source said Internal Control doubts that the guns have been destroyed, but believes that they were taken from the police station and ended up on the black market.

The Serbian Internal Affairs Ministry did not reply to N1’s questions regarding the investigation into this case and the procedures violated because the weapons were not adequately stored.
