N1: Prosecutor/student denied entry into law school

N1 learned that the incident at Novi Sad University’s law school was about failure to allow access to a 40-year-old man who is both a student and a public prosecutor.
Stefan Basic tried to enter the law school to attend the students’ plenary meeting, claiming he just wants to hear their views. He was denied entry by student security guards even though he showed his student book. Students in Serbia have burgundy colored booklets which include their pictures and personal data as well as the university school they are enrolled in and their grades.
Basic was appointed public prosecutor in Becej on January 30 2024 after several years as an assistant public prosecutor. He enrolled in master studies in October 2024.
He refused to answer N1’s questions about his public prosecutor’s post but said that he has the same rights as other students and wanted to take part in the plenary. He said he walked away after he was not allowed in.
Law school students told N1 that Basic appeared at the same time as a Novi Sad TV crew that recorded the incident. They doubted that he was a student and wanted to know more about him. Basic said he was not with the crew and that he showed personal ID and information on his phone to the student security.
A picture of his student book page with his personal information on it was posted on social media networks.
Law school students contacted reporters when the pro-regime Novi Sad TV journalist ordered them to let her and the crew in and then took pictures of them with her phone despite being asked not to. The crew was escorted off the campus with shouts of Go Away, Your Hands Are Bloody and Students Don’t Keep Quiet.
The plenary that day discussed pressure from deans and teachers to organize exams.
