Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic announced that Special Anti-Terrorist Unit (SAJ) commander Spasoje Vulevic had submitted his own request for retirement, without specifying what led to that decision. However, N1 has learned that police director Dragan Vasiljevic had informed Vulevic verbally on Friday that he was dismissed from his post.

According to N1’s information, the Serbian government adopted amendments to the organisational structure of the Police Directorate at a session held on Thursday. The changes grant the police director discretionary authority to dismiss and replace unit commanders without prior procedure.

Sources say that after being told of his dismissal, Vulevic decided to formally request retirement.

Dacic stated that Vulevic had met the legal requirements for retirement in March 2024, at which time he was granted an extension of service.
