A year before the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) came to power with coalition partners, Serbia adopted the National Strategy for Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women in the Family and Partnerships, and it expired in 2015.

In 2017, the Government of Serbia refused to adopt the Conclusion proposal to develop a new strategy due to the alleged overlap of competencies of the Justice Ministry and the Labor, Employment, Veterans’ Affairs and Social Affairs Ministry.

The Government of Serbia finally adopted the strategy in April 2021, valid until 2025. In the meantime, in 2016, the Law on Prevention of Domestic Violence was passed.

According to the Autonomous Women’s Center report on its implementation, the police registered 8,8 percent more „risky events“ in 2020 than in the previous year.

These are facts, and the accusations of SNS members that N1 is abusing victims for propaganda purposes, represent political abuse and diverting public attention from essential facts.

It should be recalled that Prime Minister Ana Brnabic accused N1 on the Twitter social network of „abusing women, victims of violence. The Minister of Culture and Information Maja Gojkovic said in a statement that „linking the President of Serbia and legitimately elected authorities with victims of domestic violence is the lowest form of politicking and a terrible insult for the whole of Serbia „.

The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Brankica Jankovic, described it as „inadmissible“ to link the number of women killed in the previous years in domestic violence with the rule of the SNS.
