NATO Liaison office chief says waiting for de-escalation in Kosovo

All sides have to prevent further escalation, Brigadier General Giampiero Romano said and warned that violence could lead to instability in the Western Balkans and jeopardize the EuroAtlantic ambitions of the region.

The Brigadier welcomed the reduction in the number of Kosovo Police personnel in the northern municipalities and the efforts to organize local elections. Romano said that the only way forward is the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue under European Union auspices which NATO strongly supports and expressed the belief that Serbia will commit to the dialogue in a constructive way.

The head of NATO’s liaison office in Belgrade told Radio Free Europe that the Alliance is waiting for a full de-escalation of the situation in northern Kosovo.
