Born 46 years ago in Sombor to what the Ministry described as “a patriotic family with a long police tradition,” Zmiric is the grandson of the town’s former police chief.
Parachuting, which Zmiric developed a passion for as a teenager, led him to join the Yugoslav Army. After his military service, he transferred to the Gendarmerie and subsequently to the Counter-Terrorist Unit (PTJ), said the Internal Affairs Ministry.
When the PTJ was disbanded in 2016, Zmiric joined the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit and, in 2019, he was named deputy commander of the Unit for the Protection of Designated Persons and Facilities.
He served in that role until 2021, when he was assigned to the Gendarmerie as an advisor to the commander. In 2023 he returned to his previous post as deputy commander of the Unit for the Protection of Designated Persons and Facilities.
The Ministry said that Zmiric has trained and exchanged expertise with some of the world’s most elite units - Russian, American, and French. He also graduated from the prestigious International Law Enforcement Academy in Budapest, the only FBI training center in Europe.
He is married and a father of three, the Ministry added.
