The newly-elected leader of the opposition Democratic Party (DS) Srdjan Milivojevic told N1 on Tuesday that he feels the situation in Serbia is heading in the direction of a general strike. Pročitaj više

He added that the huge dissatisfaction reflected in separate public protests has to be articulated politically because tensions are culminating.

“The best way to defeat a violent regime is through nonviolence,” he said, adding that Vucic should not send the Gendarmerie and thugs out to deal with the students.

He said that the opposition will not accept Vucic’s offers. “We have enough political awareness and responsibility not to accept Vucic’s outstretched hand, which would provoke a civil war in this country. We will not agree to that. We love our country too much to let that happen. Our response will be a call for a general strike,” Milivojevic said.

According to him, the student protests have to remain autonomous. “We now have a situation in which Aleksandar Vucic’s regime is responding to student protests in the same way as his political predecessor, (ultra-nationalist and convicted war criminal) Vojislav Seselj,” he said recalling that Seselj drew his pistol when facing a student protest. He said that opposition politicians took the lead in efforts to release arrested students and standing in front of police cordons.

“What will certainly happen is that all demands will be condensed into a few requests. What is now obvious is that the institutions have fallen silent; the street has spoken, and someone must articulate those demands from the streets. Citizens and students will unequivocally and clearly present their demands to both the authorities and the opposition. The opposition has shown greater sensitivity to the citizens’ concerns in the past period, and there is no doubt that the opposition, together with the citizens, will be able to articulate these demands. All of these demands, in the broader context of the situation, can be viewed from two perspectives. The first is that we might witness what Aleksandar Vucic wants — conflicts on the streets, the potential for civil war – and the possible “Assad-ization” of Serbia,” Milivojevic said.

According to the DS leader, a transitional government, not early elections are the solution. “The second scenario will not please Vucic. That is the Romanian scenario. When I mention the Romanian scenario, he will immediately evoke Ceausescu and Bucharest. No, I mean Laura Codruța Kövesi, the special prosecutor for organized crime and corruption, who prosecuted the highest officials in Romania, and they are currently serving prison sentences,” he said.
