Nis high schoolers boycott classes in support of hunger-striking mother

Students from all four grammar schools in the city of Nis are boycotting classes on Wednesday to stand with Dijana Hrka, who has been on a hunger strike in Belgrade for 11 days, demanding accountability from authorities over the November 1, 2024 canopy collapse at Novi Sad Train Station that killed 16 people - including her son Stefan.

The high schoolers voted for the boycott in their student parliaments. They are sending a clear message: “The desks won’t stay empty only in a just country.”
At Stevan Sremac Grammar School, they explained that the boycott aims to “raise broader public awareness about the horrific incident that is still unfolding.”
