Serbia’s top tennis player Novak Djokovic has become a “persona non grata” for some media outlets in the country that are not reporting on his most recent achievements.
The reason for the seeming boycott could be the support he expressed for the protests by university students demanding accountability from the authorities for the tragedy at Novi Sad Railway Station which claimed 15 lives and the assaults by men identified as members of the ruling party.
Sport Klub said that Djokovic’s view that runs counter to the ruling coalition’s views when he expressed support for the student protests in an X post: “As someone who deeply believes in the strength of young people and their desire for a better future, I believe it is important for their voices to be heard. What we all need is understanding and respect. With you, Novak.”
He added that Serbia’s educated youth are the nation’s greatest asset.
Sport Klub club recalled that this is not the first time that Djokovic has faced censorship at home from some of the country’s far-reaching pro-regime media.
It said that Djokovic spoke out about gambling’s harmful influence and its poor regulation in Serbia at last year’s US Open, comments which upset many, and only Sport Klub chose to broadcast the 24-time Grand Slam champion’s words. It seemed at the time that Djokovic touched upon an issue that many preferred to leave alone. The gambling industry has a huge turnover in Serbia, giving it influence.
