Vicar Atila Zheler told the portal that the side doors to the Name of Mary church were set on fire. “We don’t know the reason why the fire was set. Thanks God there were no casualties, only damage to the doors,” the vicar said.
The portal said that the blaze on the doors of the 19th century cathedral was put out by firefighters. It added that the police started an investigation into the incident a day after Orthodox Christmas.
Novi Sad is a multi-ethnic and multi-confessional city with Catholic and Orthodox Christian cathedrals a synagogue and mosque.
