Thursday, December 11, marked exactly one year since the start of the blockade of the University of Novi Sad Faculty of Medicine. The medical students began commemorating the anniversary on Wednesday with a talk to freshmen about the student movement and their struggle. On Thursday at 11:52 am - the exact time when the canopy at Novi Sad’s train station collapsed on November 1, 2024, killing sixteen people - they observed sixteen minutes of silence in memory of the victims.

On Thursday evening, the program continued in the faculty amphitheater with the screening of the film “Wake up Serbia! Pumpaj: The Student Uprising | Point of No Return“ by multi-award-winning Spanish video journalist and documentary filmmaker Raul Gallego Abellan.

This was followed by a panel discussion titled “A Look Back at the Past Year,” featuring speeches from both professors and students of the Faculty of Medicine.

Photographs documenting the past year of the medical students’ blockade were also presented.

Fear has changed sides

“None of us has the right to be afraid of consequences anymore,” said medical student Petar Sorak.

“Because the consequences we will face if we don’t stand up to this regime are far worse than maybe getting beaten up or failing an exam. When I see what is happening to my fellow students and to other people across Serbia, I think my own fear has to stop here. If I give in to fear now, I will end up living in a country where I won’t even be able to open my mouth, and that is not a country I want to live in,” Sorak said.
