The Novi Sad city government presented an annual award to a policeman who is being sued for brutality, the 021.rs portal said.

The local news portal said that Mayor Milan Djuric presented the monetary awards to 11 police officers “for exceptional results in their police work important to the safety of the residents, property and companies of Novi Sad”.

One of the rewarded police officers was charged with assaulting and injuring a handicapped protester in 2020, when Prime Minister Milos Vucevic was mayor. The police officer is waiting for a ruling from the Constitutional Court on an appeal over shortcomings in the investigation against him which resulted in a dismissal of the charges.

The handicapped protester’s lawyer told the portal that a court ruled in favor of his client but that the police officer’s lawyer appealed and is waiting for the ruling.
