Novi Sad remembers the victims: Heart made of lanterns lights up main square

On Monday evening, students and residents of Novi Sad gathered in the city’s central square, responding to a call from local community assemblies, to mark 13 months since the collapse of the train station canopy that claimed 16 lives.

The concrete canopy at the entrance to Novi Sad’s main train station gave way on November 1, 2024, at exactly 11:52 am, killing 14 people (adults and children) instantly and leaving three others gravely injured. Two of the injured later died in hospital.
On the square, the crowd arranged red candle lanterns to form a huge heart, with the number 16 placed in the center, following which they walked in complete silence in a long column to the train station.
Hundreds of people quietly and patiently approached the site of the tragedy to light candles.
At the intersection in front of the station, 16 minutes of silence were observed. Every minute, the name of one of the victims was read aloud, while the beam of a flashlight was pointed skyward. After all 16 names had been read, the lights were turned toward the train station building.
“Let us remember - 13 months have passed, 16 people have been killed, zero people have been held accountable. The fight continues,” was the message delivered at the end.

Earlier in the day, at 11:52 am, students and citizens paid their respects to the victims at the site of the tragedy.
