The bridge, which was built during the occupation in World War II, will be dismantled, and a new, larger-capacity bridge will be constructed in its place.
A group of civic activists is opposing the demolition of the Old Sava Bridge, emphasizing its historical value and warning that its removal could lead to a traffic collapse in Belgrade.
Đorđe Miketić from the „Most Ostaje“ (The Bridge Stays) initiative confirmed to N1 that machinery had arrived at the Old Sava Bridge last night, but gathered citizens prevented any action from being taken.
The Secretariat for Transport of the City of Belgrade stated that proper physical barriers had not been set up to stop traffic on the Old Sava Bridge last night, which was the responsibility of the Land Development Directorate. As a result, the safety of those currently using the bridge was put at risk.
The Directorate, on the other hand, stated that, in accordance with contractual obligations, the Chinese company „Power China,“ as the contractor for dismantling the Old Sava Bridge and constructing a new one, was responsible for physically closing the bridge to traffic and taking all necessary measures to ensure the safe start of work on November 2.
