The opposition Ecological Uprising filed a motion with the Constitutional Court to ban the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).
Thursday’s press release said that the motion was filed over “violations of guaranteed human rights, causing racial, national and religious hatred and violent violations of constitutional order by forming paramilitaries – thugs whose activities were confirmed by former Prime Minister Milos Vucevic”. The motion calls for a ban on SNS activities and its removal from the Registry of Political Parties.
It cited the Law on Political Parties that “the activities of political parties cannot be directed at the violent toppling of constitutional order and the violation of the territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia”.
The motion said that prominent SNS members and bodies are acting systematically in public to violate guaranteed rights and cause intolerance, adding that there is enough evidence to allow the Constitutional Court to ban the SNS under relevant regulations. The Ecological Uprising submitted evidence of former ranking SNS official Damir Zobenica ordering party members to create incidents at protests in Novi Sad and of SNS officials being part of a group that assaulted protesters in Belgrade late in November, including people who are still in office.
