The Party of Freedom and Justice (SSP) reported that its leader, Dragan Djilas, has received explicit death threats.
According to the party’s press release, disturbing death threats and threats of violence against Djilas and his family appeared Tuesday evening on the Instagram account „balkan_trash_talk,“ operated by a Boris Brankovic.
“A story on that profile, which tagged Dragan Djilas, shows a video of an unidentified person firing a gun into the air while threatening the leader of the largest opposition party. It also includes an image of Djilas with a target drawn on his forehead, along with a message stating that they will ‘p*ss on the graves of his children,’” said the press release.
Djilas filed a police report on Wednesday, requesting urgent action from authorities.
We expect immediate police and prosecutor’s office intervention to identify the person in the video and ensure public safety. This incident directly results from societal divisions that (Serbian President) Aleksandar Vucic deepens daily. In over 350 public addresses yearly, he mentions Dragan Djilas and other opposition leaders in almost every speech, portraying them as traitors, thieves, criminals, pedophiles, and scum. Such persistent hate speech and targeting of those unlike minded normalize violence, creating an atmosphere in which incidents like this become expected, making everyone Vucic belittles – students, citizens, and the opposition – legitimate targets,” the SSP said.
