In the first next elections, Serbia will have to finally decide whether we will be part of Europe or continue to go the other way, said Dragan Djilas, the leader of the Freedom and Justice Party, speaking to the Danas daily. He stressed that the Montenegro's example shows it is possible to replace an autocratic regime, if there is a consensus on joining the European Union. Pročitaj više
Comparing the elections in Montenegro and Serbia, Djilas says that „they cannot be compared“.
“In Montenegro, the most watched television, the most read portal and newspapers are professional, not regime like in Serbia; in Montenegro there are no tabloid televisions and newspapers whose sole task is to destroy opponents of the regime, while in Serbia they create an atmosphere of lynching of dissenters. Montenegro is the best proof that getting closer to the European Union – and they are one step away from membership, is bringing down autocratic regimes. And we should, first of all, learn from what happened in Montenegro. In Montenegro, there is a consensus of all or almost all political factors that the most important national interest is EU membership. There is no such consensus in Serbia, there is not even a willingness on the part of the ruling parties to discuss the need to harmonise foreign policy with the EU, let alone to harmonise with Europe on the issue of media freedom, human rights, and the independence of the prosecutor’s office,” says Djilas in an interview with Danas.
He also spoke about the economic situation in the country and price increases.
“Even the children can already see that prices are rising, especially of food, much more than their wages do. This is the result of incompetence and wrong decisions of the authorities in all areas, especially in energy and agriculture,” said the opposition party leader.
He also noted that the government of Ana Brnabic and Ivica Dacic will not and is unable to solve any of these problems.
“That’s why the spokesman of the Government of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, who in his free time performs the job of the president of the country, makes statements, rallies, explanations every day. He promises an increase in wages and pensions, food delivery robots, and declares his reign to be the most successful in the history of Serbia, in which ten years of pensions, as he says, have grown by as much as one euro per month. A time in which there are 100,000 less of us every year and in which the arrogance of the representatives of the government and the ‘businessmen’ close to them cause pain and disgust in the normal world. Because of all this, I expect that elections in Belgrade, as well as in Serbia, will take place by the end of the year,” he stressed.
