Opposition MP: Abolish REM, set up a new regulatory body
MP from the ranks of the opposition political party Together Nikola Nesic told the Serbian Parliament on Tuesday that the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM) should either be abolished or made part of a Regulatory Body for Electronic Communications, Postal Services and Electronic Media that would be set up, said Together.
Nesic proposed this at a discussion on the Draft Law on Electronic Communications to which he has submitted 18 amendments.
“The REM is not fulfilling its obligations under the law, that is, it is not reacting to broadcast content – to the violence, discrimination, political abuse, abuse of position in awarding national broadcasting licenses, etc.,” Nesic told the Parliament.
He said REM’s functions should be taken over by a body the formation of which he proposed - a Regulatory Body for Electronic Communications, Postal Services and Electronic Media – that would replace REM and the Regulatory Agency for Electronic Communication and Postal Services (RATEL).
“This would be a national regulatory body that would, in addition to electronic communications and postal services, also include electronic media. This would save budget money that is now being allocated for the financing of two regulatory bodies, and so the REM would cease to exist,” said Nesic.
