Opposition Ecological Uprising MP Aleskandar Jovanovic Cuta said on Tuesday that he would demand to see the contracts on the reconstruction of the General Staff building in central Belgrade.

The announced start of what the authorities are calling the revitalization of the building caused an uproar because the government revoked its status of a heritage site with experts saying the decision is in violation of the law. The Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments was raided by BIA security agency agents on Monday with Jovanovic Cuta saying that the raid was intended to prevent them from speaking to the media about the case.

Jovanovic Cuta told a news conference that he wants President Aleksandar Vucic and outgoing Construction, Traffic and Infrastructure Minister Goran Vesic to release the contract signed with the US Affinity Global Development company which is owned by Jared Kushner, a former US presidential advisor.

“What NATO failed to do in 1999, Vucic is planning to do now,” Jovanovic Cuta said, alluding to the Alliance air strikes that destroyed a part of the general staff building.

He said he is planning to visit the Institute to ask them about the raid and the building, Chief of Staff General Milan Mojsilovic, BIA chief Vladimir Orlic and the culture ministry.
