Opposition MPs seek judicial review of Lex Specialis on General Staff Complex

The petitioners come from the parliamentary groups of the Green-Left Front (ZLF), Movement of Free Citizens (PSG), Party of Democratic Action of Sandzak (SDA Sandzak), Party for Freedom and Justice (SSP), People’s Party (NPS), and Serbia Centre (SRCE).

Biljana Djordjevic of the Green-Left Front explained that the MPs are legally authorized to submit such a proposal, this is not merely an initiative, but an official constitutional challenge.

“In our submission we are asking the Constitutional Court to rule that the law is incompatible with the Constitution. We believe the entire piece of legislation is unconstitutional and violates multiple constitutional provisions. We are also requesting that the Court immediately suspend the implementation of any individual acts or measures taken under the law until it reaches a final decision, because irreversible damage could be done to Serbia’s historical heritage in the meantime,” Djordjevic said.

Experts have warned that the sole purpose of the special law is to bypass standard procedures, strip the General Staff Complex site of its cultural monument status, and facilitate its demolition “in order to satisfy the interests of an American partner” -specifically Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump.
