The Bird Protection and Study Society of Serbia said on Monday that its activists found hundreds of dead birds in fields around the northern town of Kikinda near the border with Romania.

A press release said that the majority of the birds were protected species and added that the birds are thought to have been poisoned. Ornithologists claim this to be the worst recorded mass poisoning of birds in this part of Europe.

“These birds from the crow family feed on insects and seed and that is probably where they found the poisoned bait,” it said. A Society biologist warned that these birds are extremely important in the food chain because they build nest for themselves and for owls and other predators who feed on rodents adding that rodent-feeding birds leave when crows die off. The press release recalled that rodent numbers have been rising with the mass felling of trees in Vojvodina.
