In a video message posted on Instagram, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, seated at a table with bowls of cherries and strawberries in front of him, extended an invitation to “everyone who thinks differently” to start a dialogue at all levels, aiming to find common ground.

He said that it will be fine even if the other side refuses to talk, because people will then be able to see for themselves who was open to dialogue and who wasn’t.

“After many months of terror in the streets, unlawful behavior, and the suppression of rights and freedoms for all, the elections in Zajecar and Kosjeric have come to a close,” said Vucic and called on the citizens, regardless of their political views, to focus on Serbia and what needs to be done to improve everyday life.

He said that everyone made mistakes, adding that he includes himself in that assessment.

“We all talked about ourselves, about our achievements and failures, and we forgot to talk about the citizens, the ordinary people who are the reason we are in politics and fighting for something in the first place,” the Serbian president said.

Vucic explained that the cherries and strawberries in front of him are locally grown and should symbolize “a new beginning, of dialogue, cooperation, and of Serbia’s future.”

He thanked the people of Zajecar and Kosjeric for their support in the elections held on Sunday.

Both the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and the opposition have claimed victory in these local elections. According to preliminary results from the Republic Election Commission (RIK), the SNS holds a one-seat advantage in Kosjeric, with 51 more votes. Official results for Zajecar have yet to be released.
