Parents gathered in front of the central Belgrade school where 9 children and a security guard were killed in a mass shooting in May, protesting what they said is the inadequate reaction of the authorities.

A 13 year old boy gunned down the security guard and 8 fellow students in the worst mass shooting in Serbia to date. That shooting was followed a day later by another by a 21 year old man in two villages outside Belgrade. The parents of the children who were killed and parents of children still at the school have been demanding that the part of the school where the mass shooting took place should be turned into a memorial. Wednesday’s gathering was the second recent protest in front of the school.

The parents lit candles and laid flowers in silence in front of the school. They said they want security in schools.

One of the parents said they were surprised by the celebration and fireworks that followed Sunday’s elections. “Our message is that we were surprised by the scenes of celebration, toasts and fireworks on Sunday in a year when we had the two worst crimes any of us remember, when we first lost 9 children and their guard and then 9 more young people the youngest of them 15 and the oldest 25. I think that any celebration, whatever the event, is completely inappropriate,” Zarko Cvejic told N1 adding that the parents are facing a civil suit in court.

The parents put flyers saying Restore Security in Schools, Serbia Stop! Your Children Aren’t Safe and We Won’t Forgive You For the Children.
