Following the eruption of Mount Etna, over 100 Serbian nationals who were to return to Belgrade got stuck in Sicily because Serbia's flag carrier Air Serbia has not sent a plane to fly them back. According to unofficial information, it will reach Sicily on Friday.

“It’s a beautiful, sunny day here and all the talk that there are no flights because the Etna volcano is spewing out ash is not true. There was some ash two days ago, but yesterday planes were flying as usual. As far as I know, only one flight was cancelled, from Cairo,” passenger Bojan Tomic, who is staying in the town of Giardini Naxos, told N1.

Tomic said he was lucky because his tour group was provided with hotel accommodation by the tourist agency, while the other passengers had to manage on their own.

“We don’t know how long we can stay, they haven’t charged us for now. We learnt that Air Serbia also failed to send a plane today, and they are not answering our calls,” said Tomic, adding they are expecting the tourist agency to contact them and tell them what to do, because their tour has ended and their health insurance expired.

Air Serbia’s customer service is currently out of order.

Director of the National Association of Travel Agencies (YUTA) Aleksandar Senicic told N1 that he has no fresh information, that is, that there are no technical possibilities to send a plane out of schedule.

“According to the information I have, a regular flight is scheduled for Friday and I do not believe there’ll be any other news,” Senicic told N1.
